What is BIG-IP?

BIG-IP software products are licensed modules that run on top of F5's Traffic Management Operation System® (TMOS). This custom operating system is an event driven operating system designed specifically to inspect network and application traffic and make real-time decisions based on the configurations provided. The BIG-IP software can run on hardware or can run in virtualized environments. Virtualized systems provide BIG-IP software functionality where hardware implementations are unavailable, including public clouds and various managed infrastructures where rack space is a critical commodity.

BIG-IP Primary Software Modules
  • BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) - Central to F5's full traffic proxy functionality, LTM provides the platform for creating virtual servers, performance, service, protocol, authentication, and security profiles to define and shape application traffic. Most other modules in the BIG-IP family use LTM as a foundation for enhanced services.
  • BIG-IP DNS - Formerly Global Traffic Manager, BIG-IP DNS provides similar security and load balancing features that LTM offers but at a global/multi-site scale. BIG-IP DNS offers services to distribute and secure DNS traffic advertising application namespaces.
  • BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM) - Provides federation, SSO, application access policies, and secure web tunneling. Allows granular access to various applications, virtualized desktop environments, or just go full VPN tunnel.
  • Secure Web Gateway Services (SWG) - Paired with APM, SWG enables access policy control for internet usage. It can allow, block, verify and log traffic with APM's access policies allowing flexibility around an organization's acceptable internet and public web application use.
  • BIG-IP Application Security Manager (ASM) - This is F5's web application firewall (WAF) solution. Traditional firewalls and layer 3 protection don't understand the complexities of many web applications. ASM allows users to tailor acceptable and expected application behavior on a per application basis . Zero day, DoS, and click fraud all rely on traditional security device's inability to protect unique application needs; ASM fills the gap between traditional firewall and tailored granular application protection.
  • BIG-IP Advanced Firewall Manager (AFM) - AFM is designed to reduce the hardware and extra hops required when ADC's are paired with traditional firewalls. Operating at L3/L4, AFM helps protect traffic destined for the data center. Paired with ASM, the user can implement protection services at L3 - L7 for a full ADC and Security solution in one box or virtual environment.

BIG-IP Hardware

BIG-IP hardware offers several types of purpose-built custom solutions, all designed in-house at F5. BIG-IP hardware is offered via series releases, each offering improvements for performance and features determined by customer requirements. These may include increased port capacity, traffic throughput, CPU performance, FPGA feature functionality for hardware-based scalability, and virtualization capabilities. There are two primary variations of BIG-IP hardware, single chassis design, or VIPRION modular designs. Each offer unique advantages for internal and collocated infrastructures. Updates in processor architecture, FPGA, and interface performance gains are common so we recommend referring to F5's hardware page for more information.

My company utilizes the F5 BIG-IP. Compared to other vendors setup is easier, support for the products are great. We are able to utilize our cicd pipelines which makes deployment fast, easy and repeatable.
  • automation
  • security
  • support
  • overhaul the ui
  • licensing gets confusing
  • make upgrades easier
F5 BIG-IP is good for any load balancing environment
  • repeatable processes
  • less downtime due to automation support
  • security
F5 BIG-IP is hands down better, easier to use, configure etc. It is easy to pick up and learn.

F5 BIG-IP Review

It starts with availability. So we have this distributed system and the LTM, the BIG-IP can support that and also the security layer. It provides protection upon our APIs, which is something that's really great for us.
  • API security, it's a frictionless solution. So we don't need to make a lot of changes in the environment. So that's something that's really important for us.
  • I think the policy configuration that had some improvements on the ASM word things, improvements may be on the signatures that would be good because it's a little bit confusing on the ASL, how they are updated and deployed, and this staging. So that's something that could be.
I think when it comes to web application protection, this is the way to go. I think if the organization is small, one would not be a good fit, but for most organizations, because it's a cloud-native solution, it's a good solution for web protection.
  • N/A
  • Not only internally but our clients. We have a lot of healthcare and government insurance companies. For example, taking insurance, they must be 24 by seven, and this availability layer they add with F5. So it's clearly you can see the return on the investments.

F5 BIG-IP Review

We use the product in two ways. We have a web interface and we also use the client, the BIG-IP client. So depending on your role and stuff, either you use the client so you can actually access a local machine or you use the web interface. So our nursing staff, doctors, and stuff like that can only access the applications or the EMR systems that they're allowed to access.
  • Allow role-based application control.
  • Some of the stuff, like recently we are migrating from an on-prem exchange to Microsoft 365, and having it above both interfaces, both application icons on the desktop makes it kind of confusing for users. So if there was a way that they could just use the same icon and it knew how to route for what the user was licensed for. That would probably be a little bit better. And then I think some of the face of the product, the gooey interfaces could be improved.
I guess more scenarios are those for allowing just people who are outside our hospital access. And then, for other scenarios, I mean I could see a lot of improvement in how we use it in the security platform. We don't ingest any of the logs currently or any of that stuff. It's something we need to do.
  • N/A
  • The impact when we look at it positively is it allows easier access for people who may not understand how to use VPNs or connect remotely like that. And it gives them a familiar browser interface that they can use to get to items and stuff.

Great for SSLVPN

It's used by the network team as a load balancer and a VPN concentrator.
  • SSLVPN
  • Load balancing
  • SSL offloading
  • Great support
  • Interface is somewhat confusing.
  • Hard to find tutorials/learning.
  • Cost.
I have extensive experience using F5 for SSLVPN, which it does really well compared to others - the VPN clients are available for a range of devices and work well most of the time. For a user, it's easy to sign onto the VPN using a centralized identity provider. The solution scales relatively painlessly. VPN access works well across the world.
  • Helped replace an aging ASA-based IPSec VPN solution.
  • Enabled VPN connections from a range of devices, including mobile.
  • The only downside is that troubleshooting is relatively hard for someone with little F5 experience.
SSLVPN on F5 works much better than IPSec on ASA. From the user's side, no configuration is required - the user can just install the VPN client, input the URL, and the F5 client does the rest. For ASA, profile installation or configuration is required, so the user must go to help desk, which is a big drawback. I also found the SSLVPN to be more stable.
FortiClient installation/licensing is somewhat harder and more clunky, while configuration on the user's side is comparable to F5.
SonicWall SSLVPN is also very counterintuitive on Windows 10, with the user having to go to different places in the interface and Windows settings to start/stop their connection, while their IPSec VPN is better.
For load balancing, F5 stacks up well to NetScaler, with potentially more options using iRules.
I was pleasantly surprised by F5 support, with my experience being the best of all the network vendors. I was not speaking to someone across the world, the engineer fully took ownership and followed through to solution without me having to keep calling. The support engineer also was able to resolve an unusual situation, in which most other vendors' engineers would simply give up.
